The Punisher Playthrough on Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection with gallery & extras
After 30 years we finally get a home console release of the arcade version, full longplay, playthrough, walkthrough, guide & gameplay as Frank Castle The Punisher. This team up with Nick Fury is a fantastic scrolling beat'em up and one that draws from a number of comic story and characters at the time. The idea for the story seems based very loosely on an unfinished comic called Punisher / Nick Fury : Rules of the Game which saw the two characters team up. The main villain of the game is Kingpin, but other characters include Bruno Costa who was the criminal who mowed down Frank and his Frank in central park. Chester Scully a short lived opponent of The Punisher, Guardroid robots made by Dr Doom to protect his castle that appeared in one issue of The Punisher. Bone Breaker a member of the Reavers who normally goes up against the X-Men, while Bushwacker is a rival for Daredevil who sometimes goes up against The Punisher.
What makes this one so good is the amount of moves the player has forward and backward along with up and down rolls and attack. Flip kick, throws, super spin kick, grenades and flying kicks. It gives the player a huge amount of options for how to evade enemies in the game and makes it a fair better game to try and clear on a one credit clear. Without to much practice it's quite easy to get to the first boss on a single credit. Used to play this one a lot in the arcades in the 90s and it's great to see the arcade version get a proper home port at last. The only home console release before was the Mega Drive port which was a heavily cut down version of the game. In fact it was so badly cut down that the port on the Mega Drive should have been better.
The game released only a few months after Cadillacs and Dinosaurs with both games share a lot of gameplay elements. It is the only game on the collection to use what is known as CP System Dash hardware, which is the CP System board with added Q Sound support. Interestingly the Japanese version of the game has an extra blue flaming kick move, done by dashing then jumping followed by pressing attack at the height of the jump. The Japanese version of The Punisher arcade game, has had two real photos removed from the ending in this new collection. These weren't present in the international arcade releases original either.
