And now for something totally different. The game that has been dominating my life right from the moment I booted the game up for the very first time.
I began playing this game on Normal - and using multiple continues to do so at that. Then, a Normal 1CC. Then, I taught myself more. Bam, an Arcade 1CC. And then I learned even more. Queue even more practice followed by this run.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to StellaVanity: Prelude to the Destined Calamity. A bullet hell game featuring optional RPG elements, a seriously wicked OST even by shmup standards, an incredibly colorful presentation, wonderful variety in challenge, countless configuration options, and a system so complex yet simple enough to learn that I personally believe you can teach any shmupper to learn this game. And for only $7 USD, oh Featured Ether how you spoil me so!
I'm going to come out and say this early - StellaVanity is one of the sickest games I've ever played. It's not only a great shmup, but a phenomenal passion project backed by excellent design and exhilarating gameplay. I'd put it above an overwhelming majority of the Touhou titles, even - for its awesomeness knows no bounds. I also dig the heavy emphasis on shotgunning and speedkilling, as both affect survival and scoring. Play this!
There are six difficulties - Easy, Normal, Arcade, Hard, Nightmare, and Pandemonium. Overall, I would call the game harder than your average shmup; I'm a Touhou LNB/ExNN player, and a majority of the difficulties feel more difficult than what they'd imply, especially at first.
There are two characters comprising of four shot-types total. Lemulene is a slower, wide-ranged shot that can pick off enemies with her superior coverage and tigher focused movement. Meanwhile, Azerlete is speedier, hits harder, packs an instantaneous Discharge (more on that in a bit), and gets a far stronger bomb in return. Honestly, I think she is your best bet overall, but Lemulene is far from unusable so just pick who you like more.
On top of them, you can choose between two different shot-types - Type-C and Type-S. Type-C is for survival players; significantly easier to learn and packs some really strong tools that aren't that difficult to learn. Meanwhile, Type-S is known for its complexity - being the resident scoring shot-type, the fucker is so complicated to learn that I'll leave it to a future version of myself to explain that later. Sorry! =w='
Type-C controls are fairly simple. You can move in eight directions, bomb, fire an unfocused spread shot with good coverage, focus and slow down your movement speed for a powerful laser which also lets you see your hitbox - this should all sound familiar to you. Let's get to the cool stuff now!
For starters, the Discharge is a fundamentally important tool in your arsenal, and mastering it is mandatory if you want to play this game well. It fires a giant blast/laser (depending on your character) which cancels all bullets within its vicinity. If you're not shooting, the guage at the top-left of the screen - the bar with the orange and pink colors - will charge significantly faster, allowing you to almost spam it. It packs a punch too - drop it on enemies for a consistent finisher.
The Accelerator Drive is controlled by the other bar at the top-left; the one that changes from pink-ish to cyan/white-ish. Upon holding down the Discharge button, your shot and laser will be significantly beefed up. Solely during stages, your Discharge gauge will also recharge significantly faster. You can also hold down the bomb button and deplete a bomb stock for the exact same effect - this is called an Overdrive.
Finally, Extend Eating! If you have no bombs left, you can sacrifice one of your lives and get four bombs in return. What makes this a sick survival mechanic is that if you only have one additional life left and sacrifice that, you'll get five bombs in return as opposed to four. Don't underestimate how useful this is, as resources are low in this game!
You start with the classic; three lives, three bombs, with the life at 0 counting like Touhou as opposed to eXceed 3rd. There are two scoring extends - both of which are surprisingly difficult to get - a hidden extend on Stage 5 if you gun down all ten of the towers, and a final extend upon killing the second Stage 7 midboss if you're playing on Hard and above.
(Due to character limits, stage progression and Rank systems will be explained in the comments section.)
