Strange, Disturbing Things Found Inside an Abandoned Mine
Creepy baby dolls. References to Hitler. A unicorn. Boy, did this abandoned mine have some weird stuff in it! More on that later. In the meantime, did you know that many abandoned mines were once considered to be suitable fallout shelters in case of nuclear war? Back in the 1960s, the U.S. government sent out teams to survey and draw maps of abandoned mines that were deemed near enough to certain population centers AND deep enough underground to serve as convenient, safe fallout shelters in case the Russians launched nuclear bombs our way.
One of the mines surveyed to be a fallout shelter was a three-level zinc mine out in the desert of the southwestern United States. I located the actual map that the surveyors made of this abandoned mine in the 1960s and decided to go explore and document the mine with the map in my hand. It turns out that the surveyors back in the 1960s made a very accurate map! However, one thing the map did not indicate were some of the strange and disturbing things that I did find while exploring the mine. It's always an adventure exploring abandoned mines because one never knows what one is going to come across while deep underground. In that regard, this mine did not disappoint. I hope you enjoy this adventure and this brief look at what the government thought would be a decent fallout shelter for you and your loved ones if the unthinkable ever happened.
