In 1983, Sierra released a graphical text adventure in their "Hi-Res Adventures" line based on Jim Henson's fantasy adventure puppet film The Dark Crystal. A simplified revised release followed known as The Gelfling Adventure. In 2020, the Jim Henson Company reissued the game now playable in browser on the official Dark Crystal site, and that's what I played in this stream. As I learned during the broadcast, this is a much further streamlined version of the game, although the graphics have been entirely redrawn and don't they look lovely!

I start by reading the manual, so there's a nice story time from Aughra's perspective which includes many details not given in the film itself. Then it's on to the game, which in this iteration cuts out a lot of events from the film and earlier versions of the game. It also prompts you on available verbs, although some lead to instant death. Since the browser version lacks a save function, this means replaying earlier sections of the game again, but it's quite short so it wasn't too big a deal.

After we complete this abbreviated version of the game, I then showed the only Dark Crystal game in Flashpoint: a bootleg/fangame taking the form of a hidden object clicker, where letters of the Latin alphabet are hidden in screenshots of the film. There's only three screens but it let me gaze at the wonderful production design one more time so that was nice.

Play the text adventure game and read the manual on the official Dark Crystal site: https://www.darkcrystal.com/galleries/dark-crystal-galleries/play/
