Sublime Biopic Director Shares Update on the Influential Band's Movie
There has been a glut of musical biopics over the last several years, but one of the more unusual projects on the horizon is a biopic of the band Sublime, whose success was snuffed out before it could begin by the tragic death of their lead singer, Bradley Nowell. Blue Bayou's Justin Chon is set to direct the film and co-write its screenplay. Chon spoke to Collider's Steve Weintraub recently on the red carpet for his upcoming Apple TV+ series, Chief of War. The film is still in the works, with Riverdale's KJ Apa cast as Nowell, but the story is in flux. Says Chon:
"As it's currently written, it’ll mostly follow from the early ‘90s until the end of Brad's life. But I think we're malleable because we're not quite set yet. I love the script that we have right now, but it could shift."
Chon outlined why he thinks a Sublime film could spotlight how important the band was to the evolution of popular music:
"...I really think that they were such an influential band in the ‘90s, and I'd like for more people to know who they are, because they're not the Beatles, but they are, to the people who love them, such an important, seminal band. You know, swing, hardcore, punk, dancehall, they just combined so many. They're the original creators of rap rock. They started that whole thing."
Unfortunately, Chon does not practice Santeria, and he's got no crystal ball, so no more information was forthcoming.
