21At the beginning of a new match, the game commands executable through the "Attract Mode" are shown. Before each match, a portrait of the challenger facing you and advice given by Danpei Tange on how to defeat him will appear.
Joe Yabuki, the playable character, is depicted as half-backed and partially transparent so that he can see his opponent better, as in Punch-Out!!! (the screen here is not split in two), and with him one must face the opposing boxer in the ring.
The player has two fire buttons, one for either fist. Before each fight Joe's trainer will let you in on a new attack. He will also give advice between rounds.
The fight involves making use of classic punches to try to lower his health bar and defending himself through parries, dodges or counter attacks.
The player must continue fighting his opponent until he falls to the ground, and if the latter does not get up before the referee's count to ten a knockout is declared, otherwise the bout continues until he falls to the ground for the third time by TKO.
Whenever Joe succeeds in defeating a fighter, a short interlude starts in which Danpei congratulates him on winning.
A total of seven different boxers must be faced; once the last one is defeated the happy ending will be shown in which Joe marries Yoko Shiraki.
