The 1st in the Summer Carnival series and the last one that I managed to 1cc! Not the one that I love the most, but I still love it nevertheless!


It's a Compile shooter, all right. And it's even more bomb-happy than Gun-Nac, which makes this title the better title to make a habit of bombing, actually. You can shoot, you can bomb... that's it. The interesting thing is the power up and bomb stock mechanic. The resulting shot is based on the colors you compiled. And of all Compile games I've played so far the weapons have the best balance of useful and unique. It's also supported by its fun-first-function-later philosophy of designing the stage vs shots of the game. Spriggan's main fun is from the liberal variety of the unstable shot types that you get to use.


Enter the bombing. Bombing will power you down. Sounds bad? Actually the power ups get dropped very frequently! The best tactic and this is the fun power fantasy part, is to drop a bomb when you know you can get another one! Neat!


Of all 3 titles (Alzadick does not count) Spriggan focuses on free-form fun the best within their Normal modes. It's a feel good game! Though, for 1cc runs this game is harder than expected. Compared to Nexzr, even. For a Compile game it's surprisingly stingy with extends, though you do get a lot of defensive opportunities like getting shields and using bombs that are very easily reloadable. The good news is this game is on the shorter end of Compile shooters: 40 minutes-ish for a single run. For a beginner shmup and those who want to train their bombing habit, this is the best game available!


Visually and presentation-wise, despite being the oldest of the trilogy, I like Spriggan's the most. Sure, Recca's limitation push is beautiful and Nexzr is beautifully clean, but Spriggan? I'm a sucker for fantasy mechs :P
