In September I got Super Mario 3D All-Stars for my kids....for Christmas. However, we were really surprised by all of the crazy hate this game was receiving and so I went ahead and gave it to them early. We’ve never played any of these games before now and so our opinion here isn’t colored by either nostalgia or the natural desire for Nintendo to do something new with these titles.....these are new enough for us.

So does Super Mario 3D All-Stars hold up? Absolutely. These are really good games....but I can understand how this particular package might disappoint Nintendo fans who were expecting something more. This isn’t a very “impressive” offering, not in terms of new content or extras. It’s literally just 3 old games stuck together.

Well, not quite. While all 3 games are essentially just emulation, at the very least the graphics have been “upscaled” to a higher resolution. The biggest beneficiary of this is obviously Mario 64, which looks way better than any N64 game ever made. I’ve compared this to the popular DS remake and I have to say, this version still just looks a lot better. And, for better and for worse, it plays exactly like the N64 version. I think that makes this, given the proper use of an analog stick, the single best version of Mario 64 that’s commercially available.

Anyway, we really enjoyed our time with this. I’m still playing these games now....especially Mario 64, since retro is my thing.

Hopefully Nintendo will do something similar with Zelda because I have always wanted to play the Wind Waker!

Thanks for watching!
