JJ and Jeff is one of our favorite games on the TurboGrafx-16
The TurboGrafx-16 Mini has come and gone, and most people have probably put their’s on the shelf next to all the other mini-consoles that have come out over the years. We, however, are still playing ours on an almost daily basis and one of the main reasons has turned out to be sort of a surprise.....JJ and Jeff. Over the years JJ and Jeff hasn’t really gotten much positive attention, though doing research for this video, I can confirm that the game did get generally favorable reviews at the time of its release in early 1990. Both Game Pro and Electronic Gaming Monthly more or less recommend the game. But that’s not to say the game was ever popular.....how could it be?
JJ and Jeff was a weird game, for a weird console that came out at a time when most of the world was really still gearing up for the next NES Mario classic (Mario 3). The only reason I knew ANYTHING about the game, at the time of its release, was thanks to the gaming press, and tips and tricks covered by Game Pro in one of their early guide books. Until the TurboGrafx Mini, we’d never even really had the chance to see the game in action, aside from emulation or watching long plays online.
And you know what? It’s really fun.
In this video we talk about why the game resonates with us, even though we realize that it does not necessarily impress most contemporary gamers. But our suspicion is that most contemporary reviewers, even professional ones, haven’t really gotten far enough in this difficult platformer to give it a fair review. In light of that, here’s our review.
Thanks for watching!
