Super Mario Bros. 2 Playthrough

A decent amount of second installments for NES games were weird and different. Nintendo hadn’t established the formulas yet and this allowed for some experimentation. SMB2 is a slight outlier in that Nintendo took an existing property, Doki Doki Panic, made it more Mario-friendly, and sent it to the states. This is because they felt the Japanese SMB2 (Lost Levels in the USA) was too hard. They were right, but SMB2 isn’t exactly three days at Disneyland. Some of that is because of the strange jump and movement physics of the game. They are a bit wonky at the best of times and do require some quick adjustments and this can lead to unintentional mistakes because jumping is, at best, imprecise.
It’s good the four playable characters each have something that makes them stand out and these will inform the player’s decision on how they approach a particular stage. The game design is multi-faceted and multi-layered with optional routes. Unfortunately, this leads to too many shortcuts for stages (which were exploited in this run) and it gives the feeling of being a bit slapdash. The music is solid, the visuals are bright and colorful and the game is challenging enough (perhaps too much so in spots) and is an enjoyable romp. Trying different characters for different stages is definitely a highlight. It’s not Nintendo or Mario at their best, but it has a few fun wrinkles that have become part of the mythos.
