Galaga, Arcade, 1981. Rating: 3 out of 4 stars (NES version, played for video: 3)

While other games of its genre may have done it better, Galaga gets a lot right and improves on its predecessor, Galaxian, in almost every way. The enemies are smarter and more aggressive. They force the gamer to think tactically and make sure their shot counts. While there isn’t a great deal of difference in the enemies level to level, they still manage to keep the game feeling fresh at a fast pace. The idea of having the enemy capture a ship and then recovering it for dual action is an underrated gem of an idea, also. Not meant to be played in more than a few sittings, but what Galaga does provide is more than enough. One of the finest games of the pre-NES era.
