Arcade, 1981. Rating: 3 out of 4 stars (NES version, played for video: 1.5)

Donkey Kong is a game that is almost more interesting for the stories about the game (particularly involving the documentary). Nonetheless, it remains a major achievement in the world of gaming and should be treated as such. The structure of the game is simple: Climb up and save Pauline from Donkey Kong while avoiding the many tricks and traps along the way. It’s a straightforward enough concept and there are enough random variables to keep you on edge throughout.

Like many arcade games, it is short and designed to be played over and over again in a perpetual cycle. How much you appreciate that style of gaming will go a long way to determining your overall enthusiasm for the title. The same cannot be said for the NES port, which really does a disservice by only putting in three of the four stages into the game. Even for an early-stage NES game, it should not have been that hard to get all four stages into it. It plays reasonably well but taking such a lazy shortcut leaves a bitter taste in one’s mouth. Still, the arcade version did introduce two iconic characters (and a documentary that is getting weirder as time passes) so there is that.
