The formula that had been pretty well established by the second Mega Man gets a few added wrinkles with the third entry. The introduction of the robot dog Rush and his many capabilities as well as Proto Man. The game’s structure also gets a tweak with a mid-section serving as a bridge between the eight robot masters and the final Wily stages. This would be used throughout the rest of the NES series, for better and for worse. The novelty here is you have to refight the eight robot masters from Mega Man 2, which is an inspired idea. A shame it doesn’t get reused in this way in future games, but perhaps for the best.

The classic Mega Man elements are in place throughout including a strong group of robot masters, clever game design and some of the best tunes in the series. Gemini, Snake, and Wily 1 themes are among the standouts. Rush is also used well throughout the game, though Rush Marine is a two-stage afterthought. The game does have some lag issues (particularly in the second half of the game) and the Wily stages aren’t as fleshed out or interesting as they are in other Mega Mans. Still, the overall quality of this title makes it among the very best in the series (if not the very best).
