An unexpected treat accompanying the Switch release of 3D World is Bowser’s Fury, an offshoot game that takes full advantage of Cat Mario’s abilities in an open-world setting. A hybrid of 3D World’s capabilities and Mario Odyssey with a more open, relaxed sandbox design, this game is a real delight. It’s well-paced and well-designed and most of the zones have enough variety design-wise to offer some fresh platforming challenges. Too bad the game is awfully short (even going for 100 Cat Shines doesn’t make it terribly long) and there is a decided lack of variety with the achievements. It’s perhaps inevitable, but more could have been done given how much variety some of the zones offer. The endgame is also a bit rushed and more irritating than fun as you try to get the last shines before the final battle. It’s more than a throwaway and is clearly designed with care and the basic template would work tremendously well in future. Plus, it’s hard to go wrong with the odd pairing of Mario and Bowser Jr. working together.
