2As demonstrated, the Japanese Famicom and the USA NES versions both do it. Press the Select button repeatedly on controller 1 to rapidly switch between 1-player game and 2-player game. When the title screen resets, you will hear a sound effect similar to the one that plays on the map screen when the swirling stars appear between turns.
Had to play with the volume and do a few cuts to cut out my brother yakking.
