I'm going to deviate from the upload order selected by my opponent and opt for a slightly more chronological chronicle. Well, not exactly, but it IS a good excuse to justify my addiction to cycling uploads and what have you...

Still, it IS true that we decided after the lagfest that was Meteos Wars to go all "process of elimination" on this most vexing of problems. I mean, what if it wasn't just Meteos Wars? What if it was... EVERYBODY EVER cramming in for the Free Gold weekend?! The horrors!

...of course, that's a silly notion, particularly since they have these kinds of things all the time and nothing catastrophic ever happens. I'd actually wager that Free Gold is really more of an attempt to lure in the stragglers who AREN'T already paying them on a premium monthly rate, because if I have a low opinion of the service in general outside its technical performance (which had BETTER be good if people are paying princely sums compared to the far more frugal "free" on the other similar services) ...I seem to have an even more unfairly low opinion of the consumers that will simply "allow" themselves to be charged en masse as much per month on a regular basis.

Of course, I don't expect such a stunt would prove feasible, much less actually "work" even if it takes off, but it would be amusing to somehow see the big M shaken up by some kind of grass-roots movement. Again, not that such a thing has even a snowball's chance of happening in the first place... but that's my unfairly low opinion kicking back in again. My more important and unfairly even lower opinion still takes precedence that the model would not change even so.

As a sort of "public service" announcement, as of this writing (and for how long I don't know, but it can't be very long... meaning I'm pretty late, but obviously I'd have no reason to notice for my own purposes), the XBLA version of this game is temporarily on a 60% off discount... if you were so inclined, I guess. Such an awkward resulting value, though...

That said, the usual catch is probably still intact that you HAVE to already be a Gold subscriber (and not a trial user) as per the original complaint I made the FIRST time I got the chance to play this online... weird how that works!

(I sure do complain a lot!)

Match #1
Devilot (The Overhazard) vs. Akuma (YuuGiJoou)

I'm still not really sure it's "fair" to play as Akuma... but while I was frantically trying to self-randomize (which is basically even MORE impossible on this game than most) I happened to notice Devilot's appearance, and the most potentially unfair aspect to Akuma's play style is his drop pattern. Devilot's is the same (only mirrored), and in this X' (the competitively rebalanced... I guess?) version of the game, Devilot is the inverse of Akuma in more ways than just that.

So... I guess I only ended up making things even less interesting by turning it into a near-mirror match? I'm a terrible person!

Match #2
Felicia (The Overhazard) vs. Hsien-ko (YuuGiJoou)

I don't know much about Darkstalkers in general, and everything I do manage to learn just ends up confusing me further, so... obviously it's difficult work trying to make an informed decision... but I think for the time being, Hsien-ko is probably my favorite among them for a variety of reasons.

I think this matchup happened before in my previous set of uploads on this game... since I can't randomly select characters with any degree of reliability, I'm pretty sure Felicia seems to send me the suggestive cue that I should pick a different Darkstalker... and I always seem to avoid the other two, although to be fair, I'd choose a Darkstalker over a Street Fighter conceptually almost any day... although that isn't saying too much, I guess.

And here I'd thought the key to playingthis was to learn every opponent's attack pattern so that you can try to stack your own deck against them... nahh~!

Match #3
Mei-Ling (The Overhazard) vs. Ryu (YuuGiJoou)

Or "Lin-Lin," if you prefer. She's Hsien-ko's (or "Lei-Lei"'s) sister, usually resting in talisman form over the other's face, although I'm not entirely convinced I really understand the mechanics. This is how they do battle! Except here, she just kinda sits on the ground anyway, meaning... I guess they ARE technically separately-battling in this game in particular!

So what's up with the quirky "translation" of names? Did the original names seem silly and lack a certain linguistic intimidation factor? Clearly, you're only as strong as your name is exotic!

Anyway, the fact is that besides the three secret characters lurking beneath the apparent bottom row of the select screen, you can also bring out extra-secret "characters" which are basically re-skins of the characters they already represented. The Overhazard actually has a couple more of those on the matches split between us, so go enjoy those, too! (When they go live sometime in the future.)
