Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo! Puzzle Mashing (Arcade) - Retro Adventure Ep. 295
Even though this is called Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo, this was the very first one, it's just a play on words because of the old-school SF2 arcade meme of having so many versions. Puzzle games were huge in arcades and this was a clever way for Capcom to branch out using their big IP's. You drop down gem blocks with 4 different colors that must be destroyed using a color matching "crush gem". The more blocks you destroy at once causes your opponent to receive counter gems to interfere with their plans. The twist is that you can choose your character, which determines how those counter gems fall, and you get to see their own cool animations from their signature moves while playing. There's also a special "Diamond" that you'll receive after a set number of drops that will destroy all gems of a single color, it's kind of like a super. The game is fun, and there's definitely strategy to it, but I feel like it's not as deep or as addictive as other more popular puzzle games for it's time. A common strategy is to rapidly drop the pieces and pile them to the side while racing to get the "Diamond" as fast as possible since it's so powerful. You'll mostly enjoy this if you love Capcom fighters and want to mess around with a laid back side-game.
