I am using Shulk in this video, and how I do Classic Mode is through a randomized list, my playlist for Classic Mode will display them in order of how the fighters are displayed on the roster. Shulk's Classic Mode route is Witness the Monado's Power, and each of Shulk's opponents reference each Monado Art in order of how you would cycle through them in Super Smash Bros. 4.
To unlock Shulk, there are many different ways, one of them is through Vs. Matches, where Shulk is the 22nd character to be unlocked, and he is the 2nd character unlocked by completing Classic Mode with Pikachu or any character in its unlock tree after Villager.
In Round 1, you fight Falco, and the stage is Lylat Cruise, this represents Jump, which gives Shulk increased jump height, air speed, and extra height from Air Slash, but he will take more damage and increases his falling speed. In Round 2, you fight Sonic on Windy Hill Zone, this one obviously represents Speed, I can't think of any other character than Sonic for that one, Speed increases Shulk's movement speed and air speed, but it decreases the amount of damage he deals. In Round 3, you fight Giant King K. Rool, and the stage is Jungle Japes, this one represents Shield, which decreases the knockback and damage Shulk takes, but it decreases his jump height, air speed, movement speed, as well as dealing less damage and knockback to opponents. In Round 4, your opponent is Cloud, and the stage is Midgar, this one represents Buster, as the sword Cloud uses is called the Buster Sword. Buster allows Shulk to deal more damage to his opponent, but it has reduced knockback, and Shulk will take more damage while Buster is active. In Round 5, your opponent is Little Mac, and the stage is Boxing Ring, this one represents Smash, which allows Shulk to deal more knockback, but deal less damage and take more knockback. In Round 6, you fight Mega Man on Wily Castle, this one represents Monado Enchant, this is an art from Xenoblade Chronicles, which allows Shulk and his party members to damage Mechon with conventional weapons, the Mechon being robot-like enemies, Metal Face, the stage boss of Gaur Plain, is one of those beings, and the Yellow Devil from Wily Castle is a stage boss as well. This route in Japanese is called Jump, Speed, Shield, Buster, Smash, Machine, representing the kanji icons for the Monado Arts.
Next up is the Bonus Stage, and at the end, you fight Master Hand, not even Galleom, which would have been a reference to Metal Face in some way. You fight Master Hand, and you do have to fight Crazy Hand as well if you are playing on Intensity 7.0 or higher.
After that, the credits roll, and the music is Xenoblade Chronicles Medley, and you then earn the Fighter Spirit for Shulk if you completed Classic Mode with him for the first time.
