Five years have passed since the events narrated in Warcraft 3. The Alliance and the New Horde live in a state of cold war, and maintain a fragile and brittle peace, while rebuilding their kingdoms and trying to recover their prosperity. In Stormwind, King Varian Wrynn has disappeared under mysterious circumstances while traveling on a diplomatic mission to the island of Theramore, so in his absence, his son Anduin Wrynn, still a child, is named king, Lord Bolvar Fordragon assuming the regency and the mysterious lady Katrana Prestor. In Orgrimmar, Warchief Thrall fights to lead the New Horde.
After the events narrated in Wrath of the Lich King, Arthas is dead, and the war in Northrend seems to be over, since the Scourge is controlled by Bolvar Fordragon, who has become the new Lich King, the jailer of the damned.
