The game tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, who in the game's introduction was tasked with curing the daughter of King Foltest, who had a curse that turned her into a ferocious monster, Geralt successfully heals her, giving the player the vision of what would henceforth be the work of a sorcerer.

Years mysteriously pass, ending with Geralt being transported to the witch fortress Kaer Morhen by fellow witches, who had found him unconscious in the field. Geralt does not remember anything about his life before returning to Kaer Morhen.
