This is an example test video of the Sylvania HD1Z HD Digital Video Camera, recording in 640 quality setting.
In order to compare and contrast the different quality settings of this 720p camcorder, two different example test videos were taken using the Sylvania HD1Z HD Digital Video Camera (both available on my YouTube channel) namely in 640 and 720 quality settings.
Both quality settings are encoded by the device using the Motion JPEG Video (MJPG) video codec, producing an .AVI file for each video. The audio records in mono and uses the PCM S16 LE (araw) codec at 44100 Hz, 16 bits per sample.
The 640 quality setting produced a video resolution of 640 X 480 at 30 frames per second (FPS) and weighed in at 44,733 kb of disk space for 1 minute 02 seconds of video.
The 720p quality setting produced a video resolution of 1280 X 720 at 30 frames per second (FPS) and weighed in at 106,703 kb of disk space for 53 seconds of video.
Despite the noticeable difference in file size and video resolution between the 640 and 720 capture formats, I could not make out much of a difference as far as image clarity and focus went from one format to another. Needless to say, the 640 capture format showed the most MPEG compression grainyness of the two formats. It should also be noted that the continuous electronic whining sound in the background was produced on the recordings by the camera itself (the actual environmental audio was rather silent and quiet during recording) and both video settings, 640 and 720, suffered from this audio problem with seemingly no way of correcting it.
