How to download the Hewlett-Packard HP ScanJet 5100c parallel port device driver for Windows XP

This video will show you where and how to download, install and get the Hewlett-Packard HP ScanJet 5100c scanner parallel port device driver working on Microsoft Windows XP. On HP's support site, device drivers for the ScanJet 5100c are only made available for Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0, along with patches in order to patch the drivers prior to internally upgrading operating systems to either Windows 2000 (Win2k) or Windows XP. I went through all the process and work of installing Windows 98 second edition, installing the ScanJet 5100c device driver, confirming that it functions, patching the device driver, upgrading my Windows 98 second edition to Windows XP service pack 2, once again confirming that the device driver is still present and still functions, backed up the device driver using a program called Driver Genius, and now made the device driver available at the following URL:

How to Install the HP ScanJet 5100C PrecisionScan Software on Windows XP

I have had the above ScanJet for years. It works fine on Windows 98SE. However, I only use the Copy facility, and bought the scanner primarily as a "photocopier" for when I send official documents to e.g. Inland Revenue.
But along comes XP and the software on the CD that came with the scanner will not work on XP. If you attempt this, either you will simply get an icon in the system tray with a cross through it and there will be no scanner recognised, or worse, the computer crashes and reboots itself and repeats this cycle ad infinitum.
The official HP method is long-winded, complicated and basically rubbish. In summary, you are expected to have installed the scanner software on Windows 98 (or 95 or Me) and then run an HP upgrade, and THEN install XP in upgrade mode!
But what if you have an XP PC already set up with numerous applications installed?
HP doesn't have an answer, except to recommend you to use the basic Windows scanner driver. This is NOT the same as the PrecisionScan package and you won't have the Copy facility.
After hours of review on the internet and watching several YouTube videos, the way I got it to work was as follows:
Download sj662en.exe. This is actually the setup software for the HP ScanJet 5200c. Normally I'd say here you'd download it from the HP web site, but this is such a massive labyrinth, it's easier to use Google to find the file. It is 55.3 MB in size. Unpack it to a folder that will be available to your XP machine on which you want to install the scanner.
Also download HpScanJet5100cXpDriver.exe
Ensure that the scanner is NOT connected to the PC via its parallel cable.
Boot up the PC and run Setup in the sj662 folder you unpacked.
Make sure you choose parallel cable, not USB, since the 5100c doesn't support USB.
Important: At the end of the installation, Setup will prompt you to reboot. Don't reboot just yet. Just say "no" so that Setup closes.
Now run the HpScanJet5100cXpDriver.exe application (the video above explains how to use it). When I ran it, I left both checkboxes checked.
Now you can power down the PC, connect the printer cable and boot up again.
When Windows wants to find a driver for HP C5190A 3740 and pops up its wizard to prompt you with the three options to search online or specify a location etc, just cancel that entire process and RUN THE HpScanJet5100cXpDriver.exe APP AGAIN! Yes, I know! It sounds weird, but I was just guessing at that point and it worked! (What happened when I let Windows continue with its "find a driver" wizard was that it did not find one and then said the device wasn't supported or words to that effect.)
Reboot again. This time if you're lucky, you will be able to go to the Start menu, find the HP PrecisionScan Copy shortcut and run the Copy facility! Here, it worked immediately, no problem. I selected a printer on the network and did a test photocopy - perfect!
