I love this quest for 9S' character. He hacks into 3 existential machines which are in pain over their existence, which makes him go so far as to question his own existence. Hell, the last machine hack even causes him to experience empathy pain for what the machine was going through.

I have a hard time taking people seriously who write 9S off as annoying, bratty, and being an uncaring "robo racist" elitist towards the machines. While he has been taught (programmed) that machines are the enemy and have no free autonomous thought of their own, he has time and time again acknowledged when a machine IS experiencing human traits, even though it goes against everything he's been taught and exists for. He even goes so far as to question his own existence/purpose, which requires pretty deep introspective thought. He's the one who has the biggest reactions to the things machines do, and gets the most shaken up.

Because he can delve into the minds of others, it gives him more insight and a better perspective than other characters. Sometimes maybe TOO much insight.
