A summary by the Kochi Prefectural Police has revealed that there were 10 traffic accident fatalities in the first half of 2025, a decrease from 2024. However, more than half of these fatalities were elderly.
According to the prefectural police, there were 371 personal injury accidents in the prefecture in the first half of 2025, a decrease of 52 from the previous year. The number of injured people was 397, a decrease of 60. The number of fatalities was 10, a decrease of 2. However, six out of the ten fatalities were elderly.
Of the fatal accidents, three were pedestrian accidents and three involved bicycles. All three bicycle accidents involved elderly people. The prefectural police continue to call for the prevention of accidents involving elderly people, and also offer a warning during the summer vacation and Obon holidays: "When driving on roads or expressways that you do not usually travel, please concentrate on driving and take early breaks."
