Factor Rowen has an absurd amount of Iron Stance this early in the game and, moreover, the old man even has the Grace skill, which grants him super armor while casting. And boy, does he love to use spells! Not to mention Knife Revenge to instantly punish an air recovery.
Rowen can shrug off almost an entire Incineration Wave (that's 12 hits!) and if he's not broken by then, Beast usually does the trick. It's important to start the combo with a fire Arte because Rowen is much weaker to Fire (x2) than to Blow (x1.5), but more importantly, he'll be inflicted with Burn.
This status ailment shreds through half of his HP, despite having its damage output nerfed compared to the previous game. The Catana is equipped once again rather than Gaius' default weapon to keep his Atk in check.
It's important to note that the window for a delayed Tiger Blade to avoid an air recover is somewhat short due to Rowen't weight, so the Arte has to be used shortly after Swallow Fury instead of closer to the ground like in the previous fight. Something similar happens with Factor Muzét but that's another matter.
This fight also features the first Free Run + Light of Ruin setup. On its own, Light of Ruin is pretty bad because the first part of the Arte has poor hitstun and the enemy will escape the combo before the full attack is complete. But combined with Free Run it's simply fantastic: the first part missed on purpose so the enemy is only hit by the light spears, which deal good damage and always launch.
Either Hydra Strike or Eradication Sweep have to be used to set this up since they have the best stun rate out of Gaius' kit. I'd say Hydra is the best of the two due to its short timer, as it allows for a new element to be added before the gauge runs out or it can be used to perform a weakness reset if you wait a bit. Amazing utility.
Oh, I forgot to mention. Exp x10 will be enabled for Main Story bosses (redid Factor Julius to get to Lv12) but not for Character Episode to keep level scaling in check, mostly because of Factor Wingul.
