[TAS] Doom 2 UV-Speed Turbo in 10:04 by 4shockblast
Information in the text files submitted alongside demos may contain errors, missing information, links that are now dead, or contact info that is no longer valid. In particular many .txt files refer to doomedsda.us, a demo archive that no longer exists. Generally everything is left as-is with the goal to accurately represent the material as it appears in the archive, however in the case of this upload the full text file is too large for the video description and has been edited during the upload process to fit. Recorded with: xdre, GLBoom-plus/PrBoom-plus 2.5.1.4
Recorded with -turbo 255
This time, I mostly built this speedrun, though from time to time I'd use PrBoom+ with TAS features when I felt it would be easier. Also, I used PrBoom+ from time to time to help visualize and test tricks and jumps.
Even though Beginner didn't attempt to optimize Doom 2 Done Turbo, I added it for comparison in the chart above just for fun. Also added comparison to the fastest non-turbo run; currently, xepop's 20uv-813 up to map twenty and RamboBones' 30uv1402 for maps 21-30.
Level comments:
Map 01 (3.57): This was the one map I finished a long time ago when I started Doom 2 Done Turbo with PrBoom+ with buggy -turbo (which is the way Doom Done Turbo was recorded); that is, instead of inserting SL127 and SR127 tics, it inserted SL50 and SR50 tics, slowing me down significantly and changing my angle of movement. I got 3 seconds on this map the first time anyway, though it was significantly easier with the correct -turbo control and building. Didn't even attempt to bring this down any further, since it's a 3.5x and I can only save, at most, few more tics.
Map 02 (11.69): Ridiculous map for -turbo; the underground area with the blue key is crazy, and I could not find a way to improve it much. There are monsters blocking my way in every direction, and moving too quickly will furthemore cause me to die from barrel damage (I go down to 3% health in this demo). This demo was an 11.6x, and it might be improvable to 10 (particularly since I didn't fully optimize the glide), but I didn't care to bring it down any further. Looking back at it months later, I could have done the glide faster, and maybe I'd get 10 now, but I don't think it's worth it to go back and redo all my work.
Map 03 (13.86): Not much to improve from non-turbo, given the fact that most of the level is spent waiting for elevators to lower and raise; the jump from the first elevator to the exit area is still impossible in -turbo 255 (as far as I could tell), and what did somewhat help me was the jump to the rocket launcher platform instead of using the teleport; that probably brought me down to a 13. Unless some crazy jump is possible, though, I think 13 is optimal.
Map 04 (13.94): Couldn't make the jump from the yellow key walkway to the exit door (might be possible using a rocket boost from one of the walls), but it didn't matter anyway, since I think it's a 13.9x, so the jump wouldn't be enough to improve the time.
Map 05 (16.86): First major obstacle in making this map; I was trying various jumps in this level, and, initially, none of them worked. Thus, I made a run where I waited for the wall to rise a good deal before jumping to the red key and ended at the end with a 17.4x. This forced me to redo most of the level and I realized that the jump from the rising wall to the red key is possible without a rocket boost, but it's an unusual jump. Running too fast across the rising wall actually results in a failed jump because the elevator doesn't rise high enough and I fall far short of the window, so I have to slow down on the lift.
Map 06 (35.97): Damn, 35.97 on my first build. Was quite happy to see that, since it allowed me to quickly go on to the next level. Some tics can be shaved (for instance I shoot the demon a bit too late), but given the high time, I decided I'd just move on. Also, I take the plasma gun and megasphere while waiting for lifts because I have time (who knows, maybe I'll use them at some point).
Map 07 (3.94): Took me a whopping ten minutes to get this. Rocket boost is unnecessary for the jump in -turbo 255, but I did it anyway to get 3 seconds quickly since I'm lazy.
Map 08 (9.97): First build was 10.06, so that wasn't too hard to get down. Good to have another level in under ten seconds. Also, when I first built the linedef skips, I was trying to skip the wrong linedef initially, so I spent a little too much time on that part.
