Comments: THIS IS A TOOL-ASSISTED SPEEDRUN. This demo was built entirely using XDRE 2.20.
The E1M2 UV-Max record of 1:38 by Vile has stood since 2002 and while it's not his best demo it's always been one of my favourites of his, and for a while I had vague aspirations of one day perhaps beating it (never gonna happen). I have been loving using XDRE lately and decided to have a go at seeing how low I could get the time in a TAS instead. The route is pretty much the same as Vile's (not like there's much else that can be done), though I need to go out of my way slightly to kill the imp when back in the first room, as it didn't come down the elevator as it did in Viles run. Also, I don't waste as many shots and so don't need to go out of my way to grab ammo.
I have a feeling that grabbing a shotgun on my way out of the secret chaingun area might be a slightly more efficient way of clearing out small groups of zombiemen later. But I don't really have the patience to try both methods to compare times, and seeing as though it'd result in an improvement of maybe about a dozen tics I decided to just stick with the chaingun. Also, my momentum preservation attempt near the secret door to get to the chainsaw is a bit of a total shitshow and I there were probably a few more wallruns that are viable in that whole dark secret area, but I didn't think to do them. Also.. the final room fucking sucks. But I couldn't work out how to get the imp to move out of the way in that last elevator for me to drop down faster. A second+ wasted easily that I'm not experienced enough to know how to fix.
I also realised after completing this that I could have opened the door/wall for secret 5, then ran on to kill the enemies in the chainsaw area, then trigger the secret on my way back, but I was too glad to be done to want to go back and fix it :)
I tried adjusting my angle between every shot of the chaingun, and while shooting. I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it, but on a shoot tic, I'd adjust my forward and sideways movement to move in the exact direction I needed to go for that tic, then on the next tic, would go back to SR50'ing and adjust the angle. So, on the shoot tics, if I kept up that movement direction indefinitely without adjusting back to SR50 on the next tic, that movement would be the sharpest possible to get me to where I need to go, like around corners etc. e.g.:
- MF50 SR50
- MB50 SR13 TL91 F
- MF50 SR50 TR88
- MF50 SR50
- MF50 SR50
- MB50 SR14 TL89
- MF50 SR50 TR89
- MF50 SR50
I did this for nearly all shoot tics, which took a long time to optimise - assuming this is of course optimal. I'm unsure if it's better to just SR50 as much as possible, even at the expense of running in slightly imperfect angles on every shoot tic.
