Tea Time

I don't like metaphors in movies.
They aren't necessarily 'bad', but they can be easily overblown and lead to an otherwise mediocre movie being understood as more intelligent than it actually is. That bugs me. Then again, this short is also something of a metaphor, which highlights the fact that everyone on earth is a hypocrite in some way or other.
So, what is the meaning of this short? The pointlessness of this mundane life which we lead? The fear of responsibility? The repression of creativity in an overly critical world?
No. None of that garbage.
There are actually three main things which I wanted to highlight with this short, and they are : 1 - MEANING, 2 - HARD WORK AND 3 - HAVING FUN.
MEANING
This short has none. There is no subtext, no political undertone, no profound life lesson. And that is the point. Stories don't need to have meaning or be 'deep'. They don't even need to have a definite plot. They can just be exercises in 'why not?' or expressions of art for the sake of it. Don't underestimate that as an art form.
HARD WORK
This video is 100 seconds long. It is composed of 913 individual frames, and it took around 4 hours to complete, from the initial idea, through pre and post editing and upload times. This goes to show that even what seems to be the most basic of creations, maybe even something which you may initially think is simple and cheap, will often take much more time and effort than an average viewer will appreciate. The best way to appreciate the effort required to create art of any kind is to create some yourself.
HAVE FUN
This point is directly tied to the first, and is also the most important of the three. Any piece of art which you create should first and foremost be because you want to do it. It doesn't need to blow peoples minds or present some profound truth, you should just have fun with it. This process can act as a 'creative release', which is a very important thing. Sometimes, the best way to release creative tension or cope with a stressful moment can be to create something, and that something doesn't need to have any particular meaning or importance, and this directly ties back in to point one.
Have fun, work hard, and don't be tied to convention.
