CPU: Intel I7-4790 3.6 ghzs with 4.0 ghzs turbo
GPU: MSI Geforce GTX 470 N470 1280 mbs
Motherboard: Asus H97M Micro ATX
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2400 mhzs 4 gbs x 4 =16 gbs
PSU: ANTEC 302 with 700 Watt Modular PSU
Case: Silverstone Micro ATX PS08B
Motherboard Temperature: 31.1 C or 88 F

Test Software: 3dmark11

Test Results:

Idle CPU Temperature: 44 C or 111.2 F
Idle GPU Temperature: 41 C or 105.8 F

Load CPU Temperature: 70 to 71 C or 158 F to 159 F
Load GPU Temperature: 65 to 69 C or 149 to 156.2 F

I was going to build a cheap Intel Pentium G3240, but I really needed to find a suitable replacement for my old Intel I7 960 in the future. That is why I decided to get the Intel I7-4790 and put premium memory into the system. I decided to use a older GPU in this system, and use the higher end GPU(Geforce GTX 770) in the old Intel I7-960 to get more life out of the older system.

Putting a older GPU into a newer system was something I always wanted to do. The bottleneck in this system is the GPU, I am sure I could score much better with a faster GPU. My old I7-960 with a Geforce GTX 770 scores about 9600 with 3dmark11. This system with a old Geforce GTX 470 scores about 4840.

One thing I noticed in this test is how hot the CPU gets when the GPU is underpowered. In a benchmark test I did with my Intel I5-3570k with a Geforce GTX 770 2 gbs, the CPU temperature did not go up very much. It went up about 2 degrees C, but when the GPU is underpowered the CPU temperature went up as much as 20 to 24 degrees C. The GPU functions like a math coprocessor, and it take a lot of the computational burdens off the CPU. However, when the GPU is under powered, the CPU has to work overtime to make up for the difference. As a result, the CPU temperature goes up a lot.
