Tempo Game Sample - 32X
Original Air Date: May 04th, 2009
Recorded off of original hardware, Tempo is one of the best original games you can get for the 32X and practically a must if you're a 32X collector. It showcases some of what the 32X was capable of and illustrates 2D visuals so vibrant, cartoony and animated that they have the tendency to distract you from the gameplay, which would be one of the few gripes I have with this game. There are flaws in this game and a few bugs (I was swinging on nothing one time after I grabbed invincibility, lol), but the game is an imaginative and interesting game overall. The game even has a nice opening song sang for the game. It doesn't sound very good, but was an admirable attempt, and the rest of the music is good.
The story goes like this:
King Dirge is trying to steal all the rhythm from Planet Ryhthma (Ryhthmia on the box, but it's Ryhthma). In order to do that, he wants to win the trophy at the huge music festival. Once a year, Major Minor, Dance Master of Ryhthma, holds the event with weeks of concerts and shows. The highlight of the festival is the Major Minor Show, a dance contest that anyone can join. First prize is the Major Minor Trophy, the most coveted award in Ryhthma. The favorites of this contest are Tempo and his friend/dance partner Katy. They'll win for sure this year unless King Dirge interferes.
He knows he can't compete against the young couple's superb sense of rhythm and dazzling dance moves. To thwart them, he has put together a performance company, Mussi Productions, and placed them on every stage. They stop at nothing to get Tempo and Katy out of the contest.
The game is essentially your run of the mill platformer where you snap music notes at enemies, jump on em, or kick 'em to defeat them. You can also DANCE to defeat enemies, which will bring your helper to your side, Katy, as well. The two of them can dance together if she's around and man is it freaking cool to watch them, lol. Katy is cooler than that though. She can also attack stunned enemies in a variety of cute and funny ways, knock down walls and defend him from certain attacks. There are a few bonus stages and secrets spread out through the levels and flying cows and this game is almost like an acid trip.
The strange design of the game, musical theme and wacky characters is what helps it stand out. There are two other Tempo games, one of which we own. For Game Gear, you have the uncommon/rare Tempo Jr. For Sega Saturn, you have the interesting Super Tempo. Enjoy.
Note: This game has so many flashing lights and colors at times that they can induce seizures and migraines. This video also starts what would later evolve into a playthrough.
