Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins - Rikimaru Grand Master Playthrough (No Commentary)
Tenchu series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPO56tlewLYTwdj6QR_XaUzec5843mfDF
The improved sequel to Tenchu. This is probably one of the best games on the PS1.
As usual for PS1 games, I'm using Vulkan rendering along with PGXP. Beetle accurately reproduces slowdowns.
Note that this is segmented and there are edits.
I decided to leave the loading screens and most of the transitions untouched this time around. It's a part of the game and every game has its faults.
I played on normal difficultly.
Notes
Controls still pretty stiff but the game is less buggy than original, which is good.
I skip most of the tutorial. You don't need to hear about the controls since you're just watching.
There's very little music. Likely because of simple size limitations.
Some individual enemies in a level might spawn in a different place but the overall layout will always be the same.
The requirements for grand master involve killing at least 15 enemies in every mission without being spotted. Animals don't appear to count. For missions with less than 15, you have to kill them all. I'm not sure ninja are supposed to be mass murderers, especially given Rikimaru's comments during the story.
Mission 5: Grappling into ledge grabs is still as finicky as it was in the original. Maybe more so.
Even when perfectly lined up, you still have a chance to fail the grab.
Mission 10: The first phase of the final boss is immune to smoke bombs.
I know smoke bomb + crouch attack spam isn't the most exciting thing to watch but I cannot stress enough how stiff the controls are. Combat is not good, putting it gently.
