Testing The Switch 2 GameCube Controller With Super Mario 3D All-Stars
The Nintendo Switch 2 introduces many different features, including other controls, different controllers, and even new systems to play with. The Switch Online service has been renamed Nintendo Classics, and Nintendo has added the Nintendo GameCube to the lineup. In addition to the service, Nintendo also added a new GameCube wireless controller. The great thing is that you can use that controller with more than just the GameCube games. One of which we needed to test out was how it worked with Super Mario 3D All-Stars, specifically Mario Sunshine. Let's check it out.
Once you have the GameCube Controller paired to your Switch 2, you don't need to do anything special to get it to work with the Mario 3D All-Stars. One issue I did run into was that you need to hit the minus button to map the controls; however, the Switch 2 GameCube Controller doesn't actually have one! So, for this, you'll need to use 2 controllers.
The overall controls felt great using the GameCube controller. The analog stick and the C stick both felt great in all applications in Mario Sunshine. I could creep and crawl with Mario or I could out and out run with Mario without any issue. I was also able to use FLUDD accurately and direct water where I needed to.
The one thing that caught me pleasantly by surprise was the rumble. Sure, I had felt it work well with the GameCube Switch Online + Expansion Pack games, but to feel it in a "regular" game was a pleasant surprise. It wasn't a buzz but a good haptic response that felt like it was making the game more immersive for me.
Is it a perfect way to play Mario Sunshine? No, the original GameCube is still a better experience in my opinion. However, I will say that Super Mario Sunshine played well and looked beautiful on the Nintendo Switch 2. If you have the system and the controller, I definitely recommend trying this combo together. I think you'll like what you play.
