How To Assign Your Switch 2 As Your Primary System

When it comes to the Nintendo Switch, when you have digital content, such as the Switch Online Services for the NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, and Sega Genesis or you've purchased games from the eShop,you either need to be on your primary system or connected to the internet. For those who hav multiple Nintendo Switch consoles, or if you upgrade from the Switch or Switch OLED to a Switch 2, you need to deregister your previous system and assign a new primary system. I have run into this problem in the past if and when I’ve flown and I have a different system that’s not my primary, I’ve not been able to access my digital content. Making the change is pretty easy to do, and we walk you through those steps in this YouTube Short.

Deregister your previous system
The easiest way to do this is via the system itself.

Go to your current primary Nintendo Switch and log into the eShop
Click on your profile avatar in the top right corner
Under account information, scroll down to the section labeled “Pass-Enabled Console”
Click “Deregister”
Scan the QR Code to login to your account and deregister the existing primary Nintendo Switch
You’ll see a confirmation message when the process is complete

Register a new system
This is super easy! All you need to do is launch the Nintendo Switch eShop on the system you want to be your primary Nintendo Switch, and you’re done!

MUST-DO
Before you can access any digital games on this new system you DO need to launch it while connected to WiFi. The system needs to verify every so often that you do indeed own a specific piece of software and you are authorized to play it. This is a bigger deal with the Nintendo Switch Online services since it is subscription based.

Hopefully you were able to follow along fairly easily. I know sometimes I forget to do this myself, and then I grumble and crab until I get back to WiFi and can deactivate the old system and activate the new one. Let me know if you’ve had issues with this and if this has helped.
