A playthrough of Activision's 1990 NES game, The Adventures of Rad Gravity.

This is one of those games where, no matter how much someone wants to love it, it can't help but stumble all over itself in the most obnoxious of ways possible, yet still somehow be thought of as appealing. No matter its flaws, I love this game.

The graphics are awesome, with all of the worlds being impressively varied (even if they are often unattractive), saturated with obstacles placed in the way of our dimwitted hero. Though there are only two or three music tracks in the game, the one that plays the most often is one of the best NES tunes from any game (in my view, at least :D), preventing it from becoming overly stale by the end, and the story line is pretty funny and offbeat.

The controls, on the other hand, are wicked awkward and usually make Rad fly into obstacles or into pits at the most inconvenient of times. With enough self-torture they make sense and become natural, and the game naturally becomes much better. But the question has to be asked - why? Who thought that in offering forth an excellent game, gamers would best have their passions tempered by burying the goodness beneath such a horribly uncomfortable and unforgiving control setup?

I suppose if Dickens knew what a video game was, and if he'd had some experience with Rad Gravity, he might've written that "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness." Too right, Charlie. Too right.

Without any patience, I doubt you'd find it much fun. If you have that, and if you don't break the controller within ten minutes of turning it on, it improves a great deal as you get into its groove. But still, why does masochism have to be a prerequisite for playing a game?
