The Badge Boost bug in Pokémon Generation 1 (Game Boy) - A Wild Glitch Appears! #shorts30
In Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow (the Generation 1 Pokémon games) there's a fairly busted bug that will boost nearly all the stats of your Pokémon just about any time one of your stats is modified during battle. Many people call this "badge boosting" and it works in conjunction with the badges you collect throughout the game.
Earning certain badges will boost the stats of the Pokemon in your party. The Boulder Badge will increase the Attack stat of your Pokemon by one eighth. The Thunder Badge will increase the Defense of your Pokemon by the same ratio (even though the game incorrectly states it will increase your Pokemon's Speed). The Soul and Volcano Badges multiply the Speed and Special stats of your Pokemon by 9/8.
In battle, however, whenever one of your stats is modified by an item or ability, the game recalculates that stat based on the power of the item or ability, and then REAPPLIES the badge boost of all other stats for that Pokemon, multiplying those stats by 9/8 yet again.
Let's say your Pokemon uses Defense Curl to increase its Defense stat. After its Defense is increased by the ability, the game then multiplies the Attack, Speed, and Special stat of that 'mon by another 9/8 (assuming your trainer has the Boulder, Soul, and Volcano badges). Therefore, stat boosting abilities like Withdraw or Agility are far more beneficial than they might first appear.
This badge boosting effect will apply even if the opposing Pokemon uses a move that modifies one of your stats, like Tail Whip or Growl.
Badge boosting generally does NOT apply to moves or items that affect a Pokemon's accuracy.
The effect ends once the battle is over, or if the Pokemon levels up mid-battle.
Curiously enough, critical hits do not gain the benefits of the badge boosted stats, and therefore after pumping a Pokemon up with badge boosting buffs, a critical hit can deal LESS damage than a normal attack. In other words, damage from critical hits is based on the BASE stats of the Pokemon, and not the boosted stats.
