The Battle Caps (2019)
Originally finished May 21, 2019
This was for the final project of my Animation I class, where we were given eight weeks to make any animation that we wanted, as long as it was over a minute.
This animation is based on a series of comics that my friend had written, which my friends and I joked about during Spring Break. When the guidelines for the final project were given to us, I thought it would be really funny to make an adaptation of Battle Caps, or a “Battle Caps anime”
This animation is heavily based on the first few pages of the Battle Caps comic, with me working with that friend to adapt it properly. The dialogue and character design were all by me (save for the iconic “Whip out yo caps), but the story, world, and other concepts (like the Detention Gun) were made by him
This animation was EXHAUSTING to work on. I went way overboard with the length, as instead of just being a minute long, it was nearly four. I ended up going into school an hour early just so I could work extra on the animation. I also worked on the animation at home, which is why there’s a mix between Adobe Animate and Flipaclip animation. Near the end of production I realized how much I still had left, so I ended up just coloring the animatic drawings for some parts and using them instead.
Despite all the cut corners, I was still pretty happy with the result. My friends liked it when I showed it to them, and my teacher told me afterwards that she thought my animation was the best one in the class. So I was really proud of that.
