The First Cosmic Horror Author | Algernon Blackwood
H.P. Lovecraft, founder of Lovecraftian horror, is often credited as the founding father of the weird fiction sub-genre, cosmic horror, however this is a common mislabelling. Several authors who have written terrifying tales laced in elements of cosmicism had came before Lovecraft. William Hope Hodgson, Robert W. Chambers, and Algernon Blackwood among others. Despite Robert W. Chambers' work predating many of his fellow authors, the classification of cosmic horror is somewhat debatable for reasons pertaining to August Derleth. In lieu of this, the renowned—and highly underappreciated—author, Algernon Blackwood, sits comfortably as the very first true cosmic horror author.
