The Game Of All Time | Milk Outside A Bag Of Milk... (All Endings)
don't forget to go hug a loved one to let them know they matter
REVIEW
----------------------------------------------------------
I normally don't play games to focus on experiencing "the feels" because I like escapism and video games is a good medium for that as it lets me be invested in different worlds without too much emotional attachment. But hot damn if that's a double edged sword as games, regardless of my reasons playing them, can also impact me way after I'm done with them. For a title like 'Milk Outside A Bag Of Milk Outside A Bag Of Milk...', it surely didn't hold back any punches.
Ironically enough, it's not so much the story that does it in for me as it is the themes of despair and hopelessness and constant fighting within one's self, that every choice and action taken is exhausting and often times punishing as the main character's world and their interpretation of it is not something to envy. What story is there for this character apart from how grueling and terrifying even the most trivial of thoughts or actions become for her.
The impact this game has does an interesting thing for the player as the voice inside her head can be used to help "guide" her and attempt to encourage positive outcomes. The voice as an extension of the player can help influence responses and outcomes that would make things a tad bit better for the girl.
Albeit what the voice does alongside her activities, the inevitability of psychotic torment lays consistent as we've seen throughout all endings. Regardless of the "dream" she experiences upon falling asleep, her waking up to tears heavily suggests that she can never escape such a hell and her thoughts, conscious and unconscious, often work against her.
As it was pointed out in the other review, it's even more sad to think about how alone she is in all of this. She's so caught up in her twisted world that any human interaction via school, her parents or the internet has conditioned her to rewrite memories that either serve as lessons to not do it again, or the reality of certain engagements were so harsh it'd be better to remember a more ideal version instead. Considering the subtle negatives being suggested in dialogue choices involving other people, I don't think it's a far fetched topic point.
Apart from all that, it's the walking simulator equivalent of text-based adventures where you often read more than make choices and some choices are simply filler and have no effect to the story. Some obviously do which end up influencing the ending but in context of the story's themes and nuances, it doesn't really matter what you end up choosing in the end. The players actions seem to be as pointless as the girl's attempts to improve beyond her mental instability and how futile it is to rationalize irrationality.
The retro-aesthetic visuals of surreal environments and warped realities and off-putting creatures certainly helps to build upon the struggle of the girl to experience any kind of "normalcy".
This is far from what is considered a traditional game. Games are often meant for one's enjoyment and usually brings about happiness. I truly believe that happiness is not an intention in this game, attempting to imprint such feelings onto the player. What it does best is enlighten and remind ourselves of our mortality, especially in the mental department. Of that, this is not a game but a statement, and a powerful one at that. Definitely 10/10.
Do not take your health lightly, physically or mentally. Appreciate and enjoy the things around you no matter what, big or small. You only have 1 life.
