The Great Filter #shorts #science #scifi
Why don’t we see life in the Universe?
One possible reason is that there is some common event that prevents life from developing to a point where it would be detectable by us. This is called the “Great Filter.”
We don’t know what the Great Filter might be but here are some possibilities:
1. Maybe habitable planets are just truly rare. It could be that there are simply no planets with life out there and Earth is unique.
2. Maybe it is very difficult for intelligent life to evolve. It’s possible that habitable planets aren’t that rare, but that the emergence of intelligent life is. The Universe could be filled with unintelligent life but we’re not quite at the point where we can detect it.
3. Intelligent life might just always destroy itself. Humanity has come close to destroying itself before and very well could again in the future. Maybe most civilizations destroy themselves before they can reach out into space.
These are just a few possibilities, but there are many, many others.
