Was Newton hit by a falling apple?

Probably not, since even at the time an apple falling from a tree was not particularly groundbreaking. What really got Newton thinking about gravity was the question of “Does the Moon fall?”

Newton wanted to know why an apple would fall from a tree but the Moon wouldn’t fall from the sky.

Newton realized that the Moon does indeed fall, it's just travelling fast enough sideways to miss the Earth. This process of being constantly pulled toward the Earth but always missing is what causes the Moon to orbit the Earth.

Newton’s groundbreaking discovery was that the force that causes apples to fall from trees was the same force that kept the Moon in the sky.
