Review of Divinity: Dragon Commander, a turn-based and real-time strategy game developed by Larian Studios as part of the Divinity series of games. The game features a hybrid of gameplay styles including Risk-like turn-based strategy, real-time strategy, adventure game and card game mechanics.

Divinity: Dragon Commander serves as a prequel to the series. The player is the bastard son of a recently deceased emperor. While arguing over succession rights, the emperor's children make a deal with a demon which allows them to introduce new, steampunk-styled technology to the world. Maxos, a powerful wizard, comes to the player as the only pure heir remaining, and asks him to enter the fight and win the war so that the demonic technology can be destroyed.

The story in the game follows this overarching plot, while from turn to turn, the player is confronted with political and personal issues from their ambassadors and generals. The ambassadors represent the non-human races, namely the Undead, the Elves, the Dwarves, the Lizardmen and the Imps. Each roughly represents a political viewpoint, and many of the political decisions are taken from modern politics.

Divinity: Dragon Commander has a unique blend of many genres, but how the game mechanics will hold up is yet to be determined. How will this do in the video game market.

The Initiative is a review and analysis series on newly-released PC games. The series will show my first impressions of the gameplay and features at face value, and analyze its longevity in the market and community.
