Circa 1980, playing Atari's Red Baron simulator, programmer Sid Meier told coworker, Bill Stealey, he could make it better. Soon, Sid churned out flight simulators while Bill called computer stores asking for the games, pretending to be customers. He'd then conveniently call offering the stores their titles. Eventually, they left their jobs to focus on their gaming company, MicroProse.
Sid's flight sims sold well, but Bill worried Sid's new adventure game wouldn't appeal to his fans. Thankfully, actor Robin Williams suggested putting Sid's name on the box. Sid Meier's Pirates! was a surprising hit, so Sid stepped down from management to focus on design, but new management wanted deadlines. Inspired by Risk and Sim City, Sid spent months working with board game designer, Bruce Shelley, on a real-time strategy prototype, but was reassigned when they wouldn't set a deadline. After Sid Meier's Covert Action, they revisited their prototype, realizing real-time gameplay wasn't working. Instead, they used turn-based gameplay and branching technology trees to create a non-linear strategy game for the ages.
Though barely advertised, 1991's Sid Meier's Civilization exploded by word of mouth, made Ghandi a nuclear terror, and catapulted Sid to legendary status.
