The Last of Us, Part I E14 - The University
The Last of Us, Part I PS5
Episode 14 - The University
This play through is on hard difficulty.
Gameplay is in Performance Mode captured at 1080p and 60fps
Joel and Ellie arrive at the University of Eastern Colorado on horseback, a horse from Tommy's which Ellie has name Callus, much to Joel's chagrin. They set to searching the campus for the science building for the Fireflies, described by Tommy as looking like a "giant mirror, you can't miss it". They find the place deserted with no signs of Fireflies, who seem to have left in a hurry. Joel finds a recorder with voice notes made by a scientist studying the Cordyceps infection and how it affects human brains. They learn that the Fireflies have left to go to Salt Lake City, Utah to join another group and continue their research. As they try to leave they are ambushed by looters, which Joel deals with as they go. Close to the exit, Joel gets into a struggle with one of the gang on a balcony. Falling to the ground the looter is killed on impact, while Joel is impaled by a spike through his body, leaving him very much weakened and losing a lot of blood. Ellie has to protect them both, taking out attackers and encouraging Joel to keep going towards Callus. Struggling onto the horse, they get away, only for Joel to fall to the ground after a time, no longer having strength enough to hold on. Ellie is left to care for Joel, in so doing somehow get him to safety and get him treatment, by herself.
Viewing notes:
I experimented with splitting the chapter into 2 parts, of about 45 mins and 30 mins each. Figuring you can always pause viewing if you need to, it made sense to present it as a complete chapter. Like a streaming TV episode, have it be as long as it needs to be.

I have previously completed The Last of Us Remastered on PS4 (I never played it in its original PS3 incarnation) at least 5 times, up to Survivor difficulty. I've still yet to brave Grounded! I've chosen hard difficulty as my primary aim is to showcase the new version of the game, the level being a balance between familiarity and challenge. Also there may be gameplay changes along the way making things inherently a bit more challenging due to the unknown.
The Last of Us is my all-time favourite game, on any platform. As such buying and replaying the game in its new remade for PS5 version was a no-brainer.

The Last of Us Part I is a 2022 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. A remake of the 2013 game The Last of Us, it features revised gameplay and controls, including enhanced combat and exploration, and expanded accessibility options. The single-player story follows Joel, who is tasked with escorting the young Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States and defend against cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. The game also includes the expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind, a single-player campaign following Ellie and her best friend Riley. The original game's online multiplayer mode is omitted.
Development was led by game director Matthew Gallant and creative director Shaun Escayg, replacing original directors Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann, respectively. The game was completely rebuilt to take advantage of the upgraded technology, requiring new animations, art direction, and character models to align with the vision of the original game's development team. The visual departments analyzed the original game, including its cutscenes and narrative beats, to identify crucial storylines and their original direction and purpose. The team expanded upon the gameplay, technology, and accessibility features of The Last of Us Part II (2020), using its game engine and building upon it with the updated technology. The game's cutscenes feature audio descriptions, for which the developers collaborated with Descriptive Video Works. The game supports 3D audio, as well as the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller.
Following several leaks, the game was officially announced in June 2022, and was released for PlayStation 5 on September 2, 2022, and at a later date for Windows. It received positive reviews, with praise for its graphical enhancements, facial animations, artificial intelligence, and its added accessibility, audio, and controller options; the response to its gameplay and level design was mixed, and several critics questioned the necessity of a remake, especially considering its price.
