It's now Winter. Ellie is hunting for food, first a rabbit, then spots a deer. She struggles to take down the deer which leaves a trail of blood. She finds it collapsed near a barn close to a coal mine. Two strangers David and James appear, the former clearly the leader, whom Ellie keeps at a distance with her bow. David offers to trade food, Ellie offers the whole deer in exchange for medicine. Ellie says to send James while they wait it out in a nearby warehouse. Surrounded by Infected which they take out together, they leave and are again cornered by many Infected. Seemingly safe, they sit at a campfire talking. David tells her how a bunch of his men were killed recently by "a crazy man, travelling with a little girl". As she gets up to leave holding the rifle at David, James reappears pointing a gun at Ellie. David orders him to stand down and give Ellie the medicine. Ellie runs to Callus and rides back to an house where see see Joel is alive but unconscious and feverish. She gives him the penicillin and lays next to him. The next morning she awakes to find David's men outside, having followed her tracks. She tries to ride off and ends up in an abandoned lakeside resort. She makes her way to an inn, taking out David's men as she goes. About to leave, David grabs her and chokes her unconscious. Finding herself in a cage, she realises their true cannabalistic nature. Sharing a tense converation with captor David, he suggests he'd like her to join their group, and holds her hand which creepily suggests more. Ellie breaks his finger and angrily leaves her.

I have previously completed The Last of Us Remastered on PS4 (I never played it in its original PS3 incarnation) at least 5 times, up to Survivor difficulty. I've still yet to brave Grounded! I've chosen hard difficulty as my primary aim is to showcase the new version of the game, the level being a balance between familiarity and challenge. Also there may be gameplay changes along the way making things inherently a bit more challenging due to the unknown.
The Last of Us is my all-time favourite game, on any platform. As such buying and replaying the game in its new remade for PS5 version was a no-brainer.

The Last of Us Part I is a 2022 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. A remake of the 2013 game The Last of Us, it features revised gameplay and controls, including enhanced combat and exploration, and expanded accessibility options. The single-player story follows Joel, who is tasked with escorting the young Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States and defend against cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. The game also includes the expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind, a single-player campaign following Ellie and her best friend Riley. The original game's online multiplayer mode is omitted.
Development was led by game director Matthew Gallant and creative director Shaun Escayg, replacing original directors Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann, respectively. The game was completely rebuilt to take advantage of the upgraded technology, requiring new animations, art direction, and character models to align with the vision of the original game's development team. The visual departments analyzed the original game, including its cutscenes and narrative beats, to identify crucial storylines and their original direction and purpose. The team expanded upon the gameplay, technology, and accessibility features of The Last of Us Part II (2020), using its game engine and building upon it with the updated technology. The game's cutscenes feature audio descriptions, for which the developers collaborated with Descriptive Video Works. The game supports 3D audio, as well as the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller.
Following several leaks, the game was officially announced in June 2022, and was released for PlayStation 5 on September 2, 2022, and at a later date for Windows. It received positive reviews, with praise for its graphical enhancements, facial animations, artificial intelligence, and its added accessibility, audio, and controller options; the response to its gameplay and level design was mixed, and several critics questioned the necessity of a remake, especially considering its price.
