The Last of Us, Part I PS5
Episode 12 - The Suburbs, Pt2 - Suburbs

This play through is on hard difficulty.
Gameplay is in Performance Mode captured at 1080p and 60fps

After the dark, damp Infected ridden sewers, Joel, Ellie, Henry and Sam enjoy an initially rather more relaxing visit to a suburban area, exploring the various former homes looking for what they can find. It isn't long before they encounter the marauder gang again, this time with a sniper in the top story of one of the houses in the distance shooting at them. Joel heads off to deal with them. Have got the upper hand for a while, the place become overridden with first more of the gang in then a horde of the Infected. They leave seemingly escaping to safety, although not all is well unfortunately.

Viewing notes:
To anyone who viewed my previous TLoU Remastered PS4 series, this episode's ending represents a chance to put right a mistake I made editing it last time. I let the game run on into the next chapter and then paused, a messy ending which bothered me later. I won't spoil the ending, although I imagine most if not everyone watching is familar with it at this point, but suffice to say it's a shocking moment that needs to be allowed to sink in.

Now during the course of gameplay, naturally it continues on with a few seconds of black screen, Gustavo Santaolalla's music plays, and 'FALL' is displayed, signifying the new season and another small jump forward in time. However every single time I've ever played the game (any version) I've always wanted to pause at that point and let the impact of what has just happened rest with me for a while and take a break. During this play through indeed, I paused and didn't pick it up again for a couple of days.

—————————
I have previously completed The Last of Us Remastered on PS4 (I never played it in its original PS3 incarnation) at least 5 times, up to Survivor difficulty. I've still yet to brave Grounded! I've chosen hard difficulty as my primary aim is to showcase the new version of the game, the level being a balance between familiarity and challenge. Also there may be gameplay changes along the way making things inherently a bit more challenging due to the unknown.

The Last of Us is my all-time favourite game, on any platform. As such buying and replaying the game in its new remade for PS5 version was a no-brainer.

The Last of Us Part I is a 2022 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. A remake of the 2013 game The Last of Us, it features revised gameplay and controls, including enhanced combat and exploration, and expanded accessibility options. The single-player story follows Joel, who is tasked with escorting the young Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States and defend against cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. The game also includes the expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind, a single-player campaign following Ellie and her best friend Riley. The original game's online multiplayer mode is omitted.

Development was led by game director Matthew Gallant and creative director Shaun Escayg, replacing original directors Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann, respectively. The game was completely rebuilt to take advantage of the upgraded technology, requiring new animations, art direction, and character models to align with the vision of the original game's development team. The visual departments analyzed the original game, including its cutscenes and narrative beats, to identify crucial storylines and their original direction and purpose. The team expanded upon the gameplay, technology, and accessibility features of The Last of Us Part II (2020), using its game engine and building upon it with the updated technology. The game's cutscenes feature audio descriptions, for which the developers collaborated with Descriptive Video Works. The game supports 3D audio, as well as the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller.

Following several leaks, the game was officially announced in June 2022, and was released for PlayStation 5 on September 2, 2022, and at a later date for Windows. It received positive reviews, with praise for its graphical enhancements, facial animations, artificial intelligence, and its added accessibility, audio, and controller options; the response to its gameplay and level design was mixed, and several critics questioned the necessity of a remake, especially considering its price.
