The Last of Us, Part I E13 - Tommy's Dam
The Last of Us, Part I PS5
Episode 13 - Tommy's Dam
This play through is on hard difficulty.
Gameplay is in Performance Mode captured at 1080p and 60fps
Months have passed since the loss of Henry and Sam. Joel and Ellie arrive in Jackson County, Wyoming seeking Joel's brother Tommy, who is part of a settlement in Jackson. They cross a hydroelectric dam and encounter a small grave leading Ellie to want to talk about Sam. Joel as ever doesn't want to talk about it. Arriving at the power plant, following a tense initial moment, they are greeted by Tommy along with his wife Maria, who leads the settlement in Jackson.
Joel tells Tommy about Ellie's immunity and ask him to take her to the Fireflies, which he was formerly a member of. Maria is vehemently against this fearing becoming a widow. Overhearing the argument and upset realising that Joel plans to offload her to Tommy, Ellie takes a horse and rides off to a nearby ranch to be alone. Tommy and Joel ride out after her. Following dealing with bandits, Joel and Ellie speak their truths to each other. They share a quietly contemplative horse ride back towards Jackson. Upon arriving, Joel asks Tommy about the Fireflies and determines he will take Ellie afterall. A mutual understanding has been reached; Joel and Ellie's bond is strengthened by these events.
Viewing notes:
This forms both has a complete mini-story and serves as a pivotal point in Joel and Ellie's relationshop. Despite the harse truths spoken in anger, they begin to acknowledge what they've come to mean to each other. Tommy, Maria and the Jackson settlement came to play a major role in the sequel. Seth from Part II (who is rude to Ellie and Dina) has been added to the remake - he can be seen on guard at the power plant gate.

I have previously completed The Last of Us Remastered on PS4 (I never played it in its original PS3 incarnation) at least 5 times, up to Survivor difficulty. I've still yet to brave Grounded! I've chosen hard difficulty as my primary aim is to showcase the new version of the game, the level being a balance between familiarity and challenge. Also there may be gameplay changes along the way making things inherently a bit more challenging due to the unknown.
The Last of Us is my all-time favourite game, on any platform. As such buying and replaying the game in its new remade for PS5 version was a no-brainer.

The Last of Us Part I is a 2022 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. A remake of the 2013 game The Last of Us, it features revised gameplay and controls, including enhanced combat and exploration, and expanded accessibility options. The single-player story follows Joel, who is tasked with escorting the young Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States and defend against cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. The game also includes the expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind, a single-player campaign following Ellie and her best friend Riley. The original game's online multiplayer mode is omitted.
Development was led by game director Matthew Gallant and creative director Shaun Escayg, replacing original directors Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann, respectively. The game was completely rebuilt to take advantage of the upgraded technology, requiring new animations, art direction, and character models to align with the vision of the original game's development team. The visual departments analyzed the original game, including its cutscenes and narrative beats, to identify crucial storylines and their original direction and purpose. The team expanded upon the gameplay, technology, and accessibility features of The Last of Us Part II (2020), using its game engine and building upon it with the updated technology. The game's cutscenes feature audio descriptions, for which the developers collaborated with Descriptive Video Works. The game supports 3D audio, as well as the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller.
Following several leaks, the game was officially announced in June 2022, and was released for PlayStation 5 on September 2, 2022, and at a later date for Windows. It received positive reviews, with praise for its graphical enhancements, facial animations, artificial intelligence, and its added accessibility, audio, and controller options; the response to its gameplay and level design was mixed, and several critics questioned the necessity of a remake, especially considering its price.
