I use FireBrandX's "Smooth (FBX)" as the game's color palette. This and other excellent palettes can be downloaded from the FireBrandX website at – [http://www.firebrandx.com/nespalette.html].
*– VIDEO INTRODUCTION –*
This playthrough shows:
• the First Quest;
• the location of every Heart Container, item and hidden Rupee;
• all the rooms in a dungeon.
The main game in The Legend of Zelda is called the "First Quest".
The timestamps for each dungeon and overworld section can be found in the comments section below (and not in the video description box due to the character limit).
*– GAME PATCH(ES) –*
English Translation
Released By: Jordiway73
Patch Version: 1.1
The game is modified with an English translation patch. It can be downloaded from ROMhacking.net at – [https://www.romhacking.net/translations/2958/].
Sound Effect Fix
Released By: rainponcho
Patch Version: 0.1
The game is modified with a sound effect fix. When a door is opened by pushing a block, the "Door Unlock" sound effect is played incorrectly. This patch fixes that by playing the correct "Secret" sound effect. It can also be downloaded from ROMhacking.net at – [http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3427/].
I am not sure if the garbled text – [as seen at 2:32:33] – is an error on my part or the fault of the translation patch and/or sound effect fix.
*– GAME OVERVIEW –*
_The Legend of Zelda_ is an overhead action-adventure video game. The game was developed by Nintendo Research & Development No. 4 (Nintendo R&D4) and published by Nintendo. It was originally released in Japan on February 21, 1986, as a launch title for the Famicom Disk System.
• _The Legend of Zelda_ is the original game in the hugely popular _The Legend of Zelda_ series.
◦ More than a year after the release of the Famicom Disk System version, North America and Europe received ports for the Nintendo Entertainment System in ROM cartridge format, making it the first console game to use an internal battery to store data.
• In _The Legend of Zelda,_ a small kingdom in the land of Hyrule is plunged into chaos when an army led by the Prince of Darkness himself, Gannon, invades and steals the Triforce of Power.
◦ Before being kidnapped by Gannon, Princess Zelda splits the Triforce of Wisdom into eight pieces and hides them from the Prince of Darkness in secret underground dungeons. A young boy named Link appears and promises to rescue Zelda. He sets out to reassemble the scattered fragments of the Triforce and defeat Gannon.
• Nihon Falcom's _Dragon Slayer (ドラゴンスレイヤー),_ Xtalsoft's _Heart of Phantasm (夢幻の心臓, Mugen no Shinzou)_ and T&E Soft's _Hydlide (ハイドライド)_ (all 1984) are precursors to _The Legend of Zelda._
• At the time, _The Legend of Zelda_ took advantage of Disk Card media over traditional ROM cartridges, with an increased size of 128 kilobytes.
◦ The extra sound channel provided by the Famicom Disk System is used for the title track and certain sound effects, most notably Link's Sword Beam, and the roars and growls of dungeon bosses.
