In this third episode of The Long Dark I almost die due to hypothermia and starvation a few times. I haven’t been able to break out of survival mode yet but at least my gear is getting better. I’m also learning new things that are helping me keep alive. I had to venture out from the cave since I was out of food during a blizzard. It was almost a total white out in this snow storm.

I staggered around near hypothermia but managed to find Signal Hill which had a small building that had food and supplies. It didn’t take very long to eat through that food though. The blizzard continued but I had to move on to find more food. Yet again I was at death’s door in the blizzard when through the snow I could see the outline of a farmhouse. This is officially known as the Pleasant Valley Farmstead and it sure felt like home quickly. It has a basement that can be accessed from the outside through a cellar hatch.

The Farmstead is found at the back of a dead orchard, near the side of the river. It consists of a derelict barn, a grain silo, and a large Farmhouse with an externally accessed basement. The silo cannot be entered. There is also an abandoned car on the property. Some distance behind the farmstead is another broken stable with a chance to spawn a hunting rifle, as well as usually having a frozen corpse and a small amount of supplies.

The Farmhouse itself has three points of entry as well as a basement accessed through a bulkhead door on the side of the building. The front door is enclosed by a roofed porch that usually contains some loot. The porch is very useful as it is not uncommon for a bear to spawn directly outside of the house. The bear can be shot and killed from inside the safety of the porch, and this is by far the simplest and safest method of taking it down.

The interior of the Farmhouse is quite spacious with two bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, study, and three bedrooms. There are two fire sources, a lot of containers for storing surplus tools and supplies, and a toilet in each bathroom containing a good amount of potable water. There is a work bench in the basement for crafting and several beds to use for warming up and resting.

Several useful tools and supplies can also be found in both the main house and the basement, including two chances for a hunting rifle to spawn either in the study, or underneath the bed in the master bedroom. A few rounds of ammo can usually be found scattered around the house as well. A large amount of the furniture can be broken down for a lot of reclaimed wood and cloth where needed.

It is a tactical choice for a base because of the size, the large amount of loot, and the inclusion of beds, fireplaces, and a work bench. However, it is a fair distance away from other buildings, so travel may take longer.

Be wary of bears near this location, as there is a den not very far away and the bear tends to wander.

Signal Hill can be accessed by trail either from the east or the west up the southern mountain. A general variety of supplies have been found in the radio hut these include, but are not limited to: a hunting rifle, a pair of cargo pants, food (peaches, tomato soup, Pork and beans, etc), .303 rifle ammunition ( a few boxes and a few loose rounds), some medical supplies (a first aid kit on the floor), and a few odd pieces that change depending on the playthrough.

Outside, a fire barrel can be found against the shack's wall where it is protected from the wind. Bear, wolves, deer, and rabbits have a spawn near the shack. The fenced enclosure provides a level of security from ambushes. Wood is also abundant within the forest nearby.
