It’s time, once again, for a Star Ocean video! And this time, the game that started it all, Tales of Phantasia 1.5! I mean- Star Ocean for the Super Famicom!

Jokes aside, this is far and away one of the most technically impressive games ever released for the system. From its insanely detailed spritework and backgrounds, to its frenetic real time combat, to it’s complex Skill and Item Creation systems, to its actual, real voice acting, this game pushed the hardware to its absolute limit. And despite being so ambitious and experimental, it’s actually a remarkably enjoyable experience still, largely devoid of the rough edges such might normally entail.

The combat itself takes a little adjustment to, being so unlike anything else I’ve played, but you pick it up pretty quickly and it makes for some really snappy battles. Definitely glad the later games moved to more direct control, but it’s super interesting to look back on and see.

As for how I’m playing a game that was never released in English, well, in English… Well, let’s just call it a copy from an alternate universe where SO1 was localized. Certainly not a SFC game with an English patch courtesy of fan-translation group DeJap.

And I’m ESPECIALLY not telling you to Google those keywords and find it to play yourself.

And while I’m not telling you things, I’m also not telling you to play it using BSNES because other emulators might struggle with the game. No sir, not telling you any of that.

With all that not said, I think that’ll do it for this week. Thanks as always for your time. And till next time, take care out there.
