Here's They're Alive!, a Russian game that first caught my attention when I saw MarphitimusBlackimus play it nearly 8 years ago. I must say that for an obscure Slavjank game, They're Alive! is actually better than it looks. Sure, the first two levels veer dangerously close into "Road to Fiddler's Green" territory and the campaign itself is only 90 fucking minutes long. However, if you stick around for this fourth level, you'll find what could've been a true cult classic had Orion Games bothered to make more than just 5 levels. The fights with the soldiers are some of the most fun I've ever had in an FPS game. It's depressing that a Russian budget title was able to have more engaging combat than 99% of modern AAA games simply by having their enemies constantly strafing around the arenas. Shit, it's more F.E.A.R. than the F.E.A.R. sequels were!
They're Alive runs on the Orion Engine, which is something I've been curious about ever since I found out it has full EAX support from PC Gaming Wiki. Here's what I learned: the Orion Engine uses DirectSound3D, but it uses OpenAL as a router for the EAX effects. OpenAL Soft does not enable binaural audio and They're Alive! will not work with DSOAL yet (I've discussed it with kcat) nor will it work with the included eax.dll. What I had to do was replace the EAX Unified .dll with a newer version from F.E.A.R. as well as a newer wrap_oal.dll. Only then would this game work with EAX, and that was after enabling the game in ALchemy. There's a few glitches in the footage such as the sped-up car alarms, but those were caused by OBS.
Boy, am I going to hate when I inevitably have to record Dusk 12 and the Stalin Subway games for this channel...
